Termites are often called silent destroyers for good reason. By the time most homeowners notice obvious structural damage — sagging floors, crumbling timber, visible galleries in wood — a colony has typically been active for months, sometimes years. The earlier signs are subtle enough to dismiss as something else entirely, which is exactly why termite infestations so often go undetected until the repair bill arrives.



Understanding what to look for in the early stages can make a significant difference to the outcome. Caught early, termite activity can be treated before it reaches structural components. Left undetected, the same infestation can quietly consume wall frames, flooring, roof timbers and subfloor structures — all while the surface of the home looks completely normal.

Hollow-Sounding Timber

One of the earliest and most reliable indicators of termite activity is timber that sounds hollow when tapped. Termites consume wood from the inside out, leaving a thin outer layer intact to protect the colony from light and air. To the eye, the surface appears normal. To the tap of a knuckle or screwdriver handle, it sounds hollow or papery rather than solid.

 

This test is worth applying to skirting boards, door frames, window frames, exposed structural beams and any timber that is close to the ground or in contact with moisture. Termites prefer cellulose-rich timber in areas of warmth and humidity, which means these locations are almost always affected first.

 

Not every hollow sound indicates termites — some timber naturally has voids — but a section of skirting board or framing that has changed in sound from a previous inspection, or that sounds notably different from surrounding timber, is worth investigating further.

Mud Tubes on Walls and Foundations

Subterranean termites — the species responsible for most structural damage in Australia — do not travel in the open. They are vulnerable to dehydration and light, so they construct narrow mud tubes to travel between their underground colony and their food source above ground. These tubes are typically a few millimetres wide and can be found running along foundations, internal walls, subfloor structures, concrete piers and anywhere that connects soil level to timber above.

 

Mud tubes are one of the clearest physical signs of termite activity and should always be treated seriously. Finding one does not automatically mean the colony is still active — tubes can be abandoned — but the presence of a mud tube confirms termites have been present and warrant a professional inspection to determine whether activity is ongoing.

 

Locations worth checking regularly include:

 

  • The external perimeter of the home at ground level and on the foundation
  • Subfloor areas, particularly around piers, beams and the base of walls
  • Internal walls near bathrooms, laundries and kitchens where moisture is present
  • Garden retaining walls and timber structures adjacent to the home

Discarded Wings Near Windows and Doors

Termites swarm when an established colony produces reproductive alates — winged termites that leave to start new colonies. This swarming typically occurs at the beginning of the wet season in the Top End, when warm humid conditions provide ideal conditions for establishing a new nest.

 

After swarming, alates shed their wings almost immediately, leaving small piles of translucent wings near light sources, on window sills, around door frames and on floors close to entry points. These wing piles are easy to sweep away and forget, but they are a significant early indicator that a termite colony has been active nearby — either within the property itself or close enough to have found their way inside.

 

Ant alates also swarm and shed wings, and the two are sometimes confused. Termite wings are equal in length and relatively uniform in shape, while ant wings are unequal in length. If you are uncertain, an inspection by a licensed pest technician will confirm what you are dealing with.

Tight-Fitting Doors and Windows

Doors and windows that have recently become difficult to open or close — without any obvious reason like rain swelling — can be an early sign of termite damage in the surrounding frames or wall structure. As termites consume timber and produce moisture through their activity, the timber warps and swells, causing frames to shift slightly out of square.

 

This sign is particularly easy to dismiss as humidity or seasonal movement, which is why it often goes unaddressed. A door that sticks in the wet season when it did not before, or a window that requires more effort to close than it used to, warrants a closer look — particularly if other potential signs are present in the same area of the home.

Bubbling or Uneven Paint and Plaster

Paint that is bubbling, blistering or peeling in an area that is not exposed to direct moisture or sunlight can indicate termite activity beneath the surface. As termites tunnel behind plasterboard and paintwork, they introduce moisture into the wall cavity that eventually affects the finish on the surface.

 

Similarly, walls or ceilings that appear to bow slightly, or plaster that sounds hollow when tapped and has developed hairline cracks in unusual patterns, can indicate that termites have compromised the timber structure behind it. These signs are often attributed to age or general settlement of the building, but in a termite-prone environment they should not be dismissed without an inspection.

Frass: Termite Droppings

Drywood termites — less common than subterranean species in Darwin but present in the Top End — produce small pellet-shaped droppings called frass that they push out of small openings in the timber they are infesting. These droppings are tiny, roughly the size of a grain of salt or sugar, and typically form a small mound or scattered pile near the opening.

 

Finding frass near timber structures, window frames or in roof cavities is a clear indicator of drywood termite activity. The colour varies depending on the timber being consumed but is typically brown, tan or dark.

Visible Termite Damage in Low-Priority Areas

Termites often establish in areas that homeowners do not inspect regularly — subfloor spaces, roof cavities, garden structures, stored timber, fence posts and the backs of cupboards built into walls. By the time activity has progressed enough to reach areas that are regularly seen and used, the infestation is typically well established.

 

If you notice damage in any of these lower-visibility areas — even minor damage that looks like surface wood fibre has been stripped or eaten away — it is worth investigating the full extent before assuming it is an isolated or minor issue. Visible damage in one location is often connected to a much larger network of activity that extends beyond what can be seen.

When to Arrange a Professional Termite Inspection

Any of the signs above warrant a professional inspection, but the ideal approach is not to wait for symptoms at all.
